On the second moon the sea of stories is getting poisoned by some evil man called the cultmaster, who lives on the dark side of the moon. Haroun of course can’t let that happen, so he travels with the genie, named Iff, to the second moon I told about before, to talk to the “walrus”, because he’s the person in charge following Iff. That night he thinks he hears a burglar, but when he goes checking it turns out to be a genie, who says that he’s here to shut off Rashids supply to the water from the sea of stories, because he has cancelled his subscription. Haroun and Rashid stay for the night in a swan-shaped house-boat, that lies on the dull lake. This year Rashid is hired by a politician named Snooty Buttoo, but when the moment is there, Rashid can’t say anything else then: Ark, ark ark.īut they travel on, to the town that lies with the dull lake, where they meet Snooty Buttoo in person, who, fortunately, hasn’t heard of the catastrophe yet. In that country no-one likes politicians, and they all try to get Rashid to speak on their behalf. He however, is not effected by the sadness, since his father has a very happy profession, he’s a storyteller, and he has a loving mother.īut on a day, his mother leaves his father for a very boring clerk, and she leaves a note in which she asks? What’s the use of stories that aren’t even true? This shocks his father so much, that he can’t tell stories from that point. The story is about Haroun, a boy who lives in a city so sad, that it has forgotten his name. He’s wearing a nightshirt too during the main part of the book, but a blue one. Rashid: Haroun’s father, he’s a storyteller for profession, and he is a very nice person, who’s main goal in life is to cheer people up.

He has black hair and eyes, and during the main part of the book he’s wearing a red nightshirt with purple patches. During the main part of the book he has a bit of a depression, because his mother lost his father. He’s very gentle and he likes to help people, and he has a clear opinion of the world. Haroun: Haroun’s a boy of about 15 years old. On the dark side of the moon lies the city of Chup, in which everybody is quiet all the time. On the sunny side of the moon lies the city of Gup, in which everybody is talking and discussing all the time. This sea contains, like the name says, an uncountable amount of stories.

Most of the surface is sea, the sea of stories. It’s travelling so fast that it can’t be seen from earth, and one side is always dark, while the other lies always in the sun. The first and last part of the book take place in a imaginary land which isn’t named, but the main part is situated on the earth’s second moon, named Kahani.
